I am a little late on this blog...yet again. But now I get the chance to talk about Halloween weekend. It's been a long one to say the least. I was surprised that when people asked me how the weekend was I was not quite sure what to say to them. It just seemed like every other weekend except we were all in costumes. Anyways I realized there are few things I was disappointed in.
Things I was disappointed about during Halloween Weekend:
1. The Po-Po were everywhere.
I do admit I felt a little safer, but they were busting so many parties. Some of the places weren't even parties, and weren't even that loud. I bet a lot of kids are gonna be bitter once it hits them that they have a couple of hundred dollar tickets to pay.
2. No State Street?
This was probably the worst of it all. They barricaded the place off on Saturday night I know at least. If they didn't want us there then why did they have the lights up?
3. Costumes
The girls had the usual lack of clothing but I felt like no one put as much thought into their costume this year. I mean, that is the essence of Halloween. Although I must say I did meet a girl that was dressed up as the "Walk of Shame" that was pretty good.
4. I lost my boxing gloves the first night
I was quite upset.
Well all in all it was an alright weekend. I'm looking forward to hearing other people's adventures for the night. I guess its back to reality eh?

Unfortunately, I do not have a great Madison Halloween story this year because I went home. Although, it is really interesting to see the differences between the stories I hear from my friends and the media coverage I saw about Halloween back at home. I feel like the only information that the two sources had in common was the fact that there was a record number of people in the city- an estimated 100,000. My friends (and the impression I got from your post) made it seem as though it was a relatively calm but annoying year.
On the other hand, the media portrayed this weekend as being as hectic, if not worse, than in the past. While I was at home watching the footage of the police gassing the crowds on State Street, I was relieved that I decided to leave for the weekend. The media kept a running total of how many people were arrested, for what they were arrested, and how many detox facilities were filled to maximum capacity. The newscasts were constantly focusing on the failures of the policies city officials tried establishing and the amount of money that was spent on security. Even when the mayor was interviewed, he stated that State Street must be shut down somehow next year. Although, he also mentioned that he is aware that he cannot do anything to stop the partying and the mobs. In other words, the situation is basically a lost cause.
This year was by far more publicized than any other year. I find that rather disappointing. The city is trying so hard to keep Halloween safe and trying to keep visitors out; yet, the media is increasingly publicizing the event. By doing so, more people are actually becoming interested in checking out the scene for themselves. I am not saying that people want to come to Madison to get gassed, but many people will want to come to Madison to party and have a good time. If only 400 people get arrested out of 100,000, then the odds of having a great weekend partying and getting drunk outweigh the risks of getting arrested.
